古汉语的心是象形字，表示心脏。它不仅是生息的主体，而且具有认识功能。在儒家体系中，主管思维的心依然是气质心脏，主管认识的心脏常常被人理解为心灵。这种共识存在着问题。在近代西方哲学中，主管思维活动的心灵乃是某种脱离身体的精神，明显区别于气质心灵。这便是科学思维中的心的性质。汉语中的心是heart,区别于精神性的mind。
